How does a power surge affect a solar power system?

How does a power surge affect a solar power system?

Power surges can affect an on-grid solar power system in several ways:

  1. Damage to the inverter

The inverter, which converts direct current (DC) from the solar panels into alternating current (AC), is sensitive to voltage spikes. A power surge can damage its internal circuitry, leading to energy conversion errors or complete failure.

  2. Damage to solar cells

Although solar cells are generally resistant to voltage fluctuations, a severe power surge can damage the bypass diodes that protect against reverse current. This may cause certain cells in the panel to stop functioning.

  3. Impact on household electrical devices

A power surge can travel through the home’s electrical system and damage appliances such as TVs, computers, or other electronic devices.

  4. Degradation of surge protection devices (SPDs)

Surge Protection Devices installed in the solar system may wear out faster if they frequently absorb power surges, reducing their effectiveness over time.

Protection Measures:

Installing SPDs and a proper grounding system can help prevent damage from power surges, ensuring the solar power system operates smoothly and safely.
