How many types of solar cells are there?

Anchisa S.

Updated: Feb 24

Solar cells are devices used to convert solar energy into electrical energy by capturing sunlight and converting it into electricity. They are categorized into 3 main types:

3 types of solar cells

1.Monocrystalline Silicon Solar cells:

  • They are dark-colored cells with a square-like shape due to their cut edges.

  • They have high efficiency in producing electrical current and are highly durable.

2.Polycrystalline Silicon Solar cells:

  • These cells are made from polycrystalline silicon with a more granular structure compared to monocrystalline cells.

  • They have acceptable efficiency in converting solar energy into electrical current.

3.Amorphous Silicon Solar cells:

  • These cells are highly flexible and can be used in areas with limited space or where special shapes are required, such as calculators and watches.

  • They have lower efficiency in converting solar energy compared to other types but perform better in low light conditions, under cloudy skies, or with intermittent sunlight.

These solar cells play a crucial role in renewable energy generation and are chosen based on specific application needs and environmental conditions.
